The Kettle Moraine Kennel Club is an all-volunteer, non-profit organization. The KMKC has been dedicated to improving and promoting purebred dogs for current and prospective dog fanciers since it was founded in 1961. Club members are involved in all aspects of canine improvement from good citizenship, to therapy dogs to tracking and confirmation. No matter what area of interest a mentor is always available to new and old members.
Goals
*To further the best interests of the dog and dog fancier in every way;
*To promote the advancement of all breeds of purebred dogs;
*To encourage sportsmanship at dog shows and obedience trials;
*To support dog shows and obedience trials under the rules of the American Kennel Club and
*To encourage the training of all dogs for competition as well as good canine citizenship.
The KMKC held its first AKC-sanctioned show in 1964 and since that time has had shows that consistently draw some of the largest entries in the Midwest. Shows have evolved to include events to educate and entertain the public, including agility and other fun and enlightening events for spectators whose interest does not run to obedience or confirmation. From its first dog show at a roller rink in West Bend, the club has moved to holding a two-day event at the Washington County Fairgrounds in November of each year. This spacious, new venue will allow better access to rings and grooming and will also allow increased interaction between exhibitors and spectators. In addition, the show will bring additional revenues to the clubs home base of Washington County.
Throughout its prestigious history, the club has donated time and energy to area events including holding fun matches, tattoo clinics, training sessions, eye clinics and establishing a veterinary school scholarship for Washington County residents. The club will donate $1,000 to a Washington County graduate who attends the University of Wisconsin School of Veterinary Medicine. In recent years the club is particularly proud of graduate Amy Spaeth, the 2,000 winner who came home to practice in Washington County. The club also helps with financial support to the Washington County Humane Society.
While educating the public and promoting proper breeding practices and canine sportsmanship are in the forefront of club goals, members and the club are still very active in the community. Early on the club was on of the first to donate to the Washington County Sheriffs Department fledgling canine corps and club members are also actively involved in the area of therapy dogs. Gentle, giving and well-mannered, therapy dogs bring joy and caring to the disabled and elderly.
The KMKC is involved and active in:
*All levels of educational seminars;
*Career Day Outreach;
*Information booths at various activities;
*State Fair World of Dogs and
*State and National Legislative issues.
And KMKC is also involved in maintaining a lasting tribute to the dog show judges both at its home show and at the American Kennel Club museum. Since 1978 the club has given away hundreds of medallions at its dog shows. Each best of breed winner comes away with a lovely and distinctive medallion honoring a dog show judge who has passed away. These medallions recognize respected and revered individuals whose contributions to the dog show world are immeasurable. The AKC keeps a medallion each year to add to the museums continuing tribute to the dog show judges. The KMKC tribute is the only exhibit at the AKC museum dedicated solely to the recognition of judges. Over the years a number of the judges who were dedicated to the promotion and advancement of all aspects of the dog show world have been club members.
